Relatives are parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, etc. Undoubtedly we understand the relationship of all except maybe cousin.

When I was a lad I knew relatives only as aunt, uncle or cousin. Cousin from where or whose uncle's or aunt's children? No one knew. Now this is what genealogy is all about. When we're young seems we don't care, but as time goes on we want to know "where we come from".

Webster says: a cousin is a child of one's aunt or uncle, called first cousin; also a relative descended from a common ancestor, such as a grandparent, by two or more steps in a diverging line.

Fine, then who is my cousin? Whose aunt's or uncle's children are they?

The chart below depicts a diverging line of descendants of Jan and Franciszka Slon. Each generation sports a different color. Unlinked individuals in a column are cousins. Example, William Patrick Slon is not linked with Marie (Rozak) Fronczak; they are cousins. Marie is linked with Lucille (Rozak) Johnson; they are siblings. That's an easy example but in order to ascertain third cousin once removed, that's hard. It takes a computer to do that. I have chosen Greg Sroka, the founder of Yahoo Slon Family club as an example. Reunion 6.0 has the ability to list relationships of any individual entered correctly into its data.
